The 21st hexagram in the I Ching is known for its intense, piercing energy, evoking the image of powerful jaws biting down. Traditionally, this hexagram has been associated with challenges, but I'd like to breathe new life into it, and I even find it beautiful. Comprised of two trigrams representing thunder and fire, with thunder below and fire - a shining source of light - above, this combination seems quite potent to me, a harmonious friendship between fire and thunder. The union of these two phenomena undoubtedly has a profound impact on us.

Life constantly presents us with challenges, and we must find a balance between maintaining control and being able to change and adapt to new situations. In the Shadow of Control, we rely solely on control, whether it's trying to impose it or preserve it, or the fear of losing it. All shadow states are rooted in fear, and it's this fear that gives rise to the need to control everything. The plot thickens when we consider the dilemma of this shadow, Discipline. Can we control ourselves and our environment? What will happen if we show weakness? Discipline is necessary to avoid becoming a victim of something or someone outside of us. However, history teaches us that too much discipline can lead to resistance and even rebellion in those around us, and it's here that our Authority is put to the test, and we must walk the path of Authority, embracing our Gift of Authority and ultimately, our Siddhi of Virtues.
